Are You Being Robbed?

What things in your life are robbing you of richness?

I had this question posed to me by a reader and I haven’t bee able to hide from it ever since. In fact, I’ve been giving a lot of thought to it. On this podcast episode I discuss the idea of living poorly versus living richly and bringing to light the things that rob us of a rich life.

Listen to the episode or read the notes below.

You Can’t Fight An Enemy You Can’t See

I heard a story about the invasion of Iwo Jima, in World War II, that sticks with me to this day. The marines found it incredibly difficult to fight the Japanese on their own turf. When asked why, the marines said, “It’s hard to fight an enemy you can’t see.”

I thought about the parallel to this in our own lives. What enemies are fighting you from the trenches of your life?

As I think about the things that rob us of richness, I’m reminded to draw those things out of the darkness and into the light.

What things can you draw into the light in order to prevent you from being robbed by them?

A few weeks ago, I wrote an article about the book and movie, Fifty Shades of Grey. The concept to me is that if we’re not intentional about the things we allow into our life, we may find that they grow into an indulgence. Too often, struggles begin with pure entertainment. Then, little by little, inch by inch, we find ourselves consumed.

You can’t fight an enemy you can’t see.

Think about the things in your life that are trying to hide and rob you of richness.

In my own life, I find myself shutting off or shutting down when I get overwhelmed or tired. I’m learning that is a direct result of allowing myself to get too busy–of not being intentional about my time.

For me, I have drawn that situation into the light and the word that I’m continually reminded of is Presence.

In order to fight the enemy of busyness, I’m learning to be present.

What Robs You?

For some it’s debt. For others it’s health. Maybe it’s relationships. Maybe it’s your career.

Think about the things that are keeping you from experience the fullness of a rich life and begin calling them out.

Pick one thing this week to draw into the light.

That’s a great statement – “You can’t fight an enemy you can’t see”. I read “Flags of Our Fathers” and am familiar with the gruesome details of what happened when our Marines landed on Iwo Jima and couldn’t see their enemy.

Sometimes I experience willful blindness with our money, but that’s just when I know I’ve done some stuff that wasn’t in the budget. It’s like when my 2-year-old covers up her face and calls out, “You can’t see me!”
