The First Step of the Day

A few years ago, I found myself consistently starting my day on the wrong foot. With three small children, life was demanding, and rather than start my day intentionally, I usually began my day when the kids woke us up. From there, it was full speed ahead; changing diapers, getting breakfast, and getting ready for work.

Usually, time was tight and I ran out the door in a rush to make a meeting. With a quick assessment of my routine, I wasn’t exemplifying the father I wanted to be for my boys. At that time, I ran across a quote from Chinese Philosopher, Lao Tzu.

“The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.”

As I thought about those words, I applied them to my role as a father. For me, the reminder was clear, I needed to make sure my first step of the day was intentional. At that time, I began a routine with my boys as a way to focus and direct our day. I would get down on one knee, look my boys in the eye, and say, “What are you going to do today, buddy?”

They would eagerly respond, “Have a great day, Daddy!” And, we would exchange high-fives and hugs.

It has become one of the most special parts of our days together.

This practice is a simple reminder that great days are ahead. In addition, I’ve found that my boys look forward to it as much as I do. When I get caught up in the busyness of life, they will often shout at me as I run out the door, “Great day, Daddy!”

Does this mean every day is great?

Absolutely not. The days are challenging and difficult, but we remain hopeful and begin our days with positive affirmation.

For me, that’s why I began this podcast. Now, I’m not certain that you listen in the morning, but regardless, the intention is for you to start your day well. This is my virtual high-five to you. It’s our opportunity – yours and mine – to begin our days with hopefulness.

Daily Encouragement

I know I need this in my own life. I try to surround myself with many friends and mentors who encourage me along my journey. Just the other day, I was having coffee with one of them who shared a quote with me:

“Never let your talent outrun your character.”

Unfortunately, we see so many in today’s culture who never fully grasped this advice.

In regards to this quote, I want you to understand two things:

1. You are talented. Humility is not lying to yourself. Be confident in the gifts and talents you’ve been given.

2. Humility is understanding that our talent is from God. Humble Yourself With Confidence.

Today, I have a challenge:

Who is someone you can encourage with your gifts and talents today?

Share how you will do/have done this in the comments below.
