What is something that helps you experience richness?

“I love food, wine, and racing cars; some combination of that, but maybe not at the same time. I’ve been termed an experience connoisseur, so I love cherishing great times with great people, in fantastic atmospheres.”

Tell is about a time when you’ve been broken?

“Man, I’ve got a lot. In my early days of leadership, I thought leadership was about me. Unfortunately, that’s what I was taught. For the longest time, I struggled with that. Failure after failure after failure led me to say, ‘What in the world am I doing?’ I realized, this isn’t about me. It’s about helping others be successful.

It is your job as a leader to make your team successful, not the other way around.

I’ve used those experiences to begin teaching others.”

Think back to a time when someone invested in you. Tell us about that.

“I have had the benefit of having phenomenal people pouring into my life, Dave Ramsey for example. But, a great friend of mine named Ron Cook, has been that person for me. He cares about me, he’s been there for me in difficult times, and he’s pushed me when I wasn’t pushing myself.

The great thing is, he just knows, he knows when I need something.

The key component is that his investment in you empowers you to invest in others, right?

“When all you do is give out, it’s draining. When you give out, give out, give out, you have to be restored. Let me tell you, I spend a lot of time with people in positions of influence. One of the things I have discovered is this fear, this crazy thing, pride almost; I’m too afraid for people to really see me. The sad thing is, those people aren’t growing.”

Tell us three things you’re grateful for that most people wouldn’t be.

“People who view their career as a craft; people not just doing a task, people who care about what you’re getting out of their service.

People who love others no matter what’s going on in their own life.

Moments with no pressure; a time when I can just be in the moment.”

Why is it important to be both humble and confident?

“These guys who are so arrogant and egotistical, but blame it on confidence, they drive me nuts. You’re 1000% correct, you have to be humble too.”

What does it mean to you to be rich?

“Zig Ziglar’s wheel of life is one of the things I think about. This concept of career as your biggest chunk is wrong, it is but one aspect of what you do. For example, the way you steward your finances is an absolute key to rich living, but it’s not the only thing. If you don’t harness this, you destroy your family and yourself. You must have friendships, you must have a spiritual walk, it all matters.”

Do you have a rich tip for us?

“View every new day as an opportunity to live richly or live poorly. Tomorrow can be a rich day or a poor day, you get to choose.”

Quote of the Day:

“The Lord has given me a message to deliver and a horse to ride, but alas, I have killed the horse and I can no longer deliver his message.” – Robert Murray M’Cheyne

Great episode! I agree that no matter what, you get to choose to live richly or poorly. I’m a full time mom and it’s easy to get discouraged and down. So I choose to feed my mind during the day with podcasts while doing housework, etc. instead of TV. I’d rather my kids see me doing than anything else so it trickles down. Thanks for the show 🙂
